Court Watch |
| |
Every 12 seconds a woman is beaten and every 6 hours a woman is killed in the United States. Why? Domestic Violence. It has been shown that the best way to reduce DV is to have courtwatch programs. Court watch programs make those involved in the judicial process aware of public interest and concern, and enable advocacy for needed services. Court Watch Volunteers observe courtroom proceedings and fill out forms that ensure fair legal treatment of the victims of domestic violence. NCJW has Court Watch programs in Skokie and Chicago which need volunteers. Your commitment is very flexible - go as often or little as you wish. Your presence will be felt in the court.

Silent Witness Initiative |
| |
The Silent Witness Initiative is a traveling exhibit which raises domestic violence awareness. The Chicago North Shore Section of NCJW is the founder and coordinator of the Illinois Silent Witness Exhibit, a powerful display of red life-size female silhouettes representing local victims of domestic violence. Each silhouette bears a plaque telling the story of an Illinois woman who lost her life through domestic violence. The display conveys a powerful message of tragedy and loss. With One Picture.

Luggage for Freedom |
| |
Luggage for Freedom is an initiative of NCJW Chicago North Shore Section. Its goal is to provide a sense of dignity to women who are staying at and transitioning out of domestic violence and homeless shelters, by giving them a suitcase packed with some personal and household items. To that end, Luggage for Freedom provides gently used luggage packed with towels, sheets, blankets and new toiletries to women leaving local domestic violence shelters to start their lives anew. We also provide backpacks filled with books and stuffed animals for children. We pack an average of approximately 200 suitcases and over 100 backpacks and deliver them to 9 local shelters. Luggage for Freedom has an incredible ability to directly impact women and children in a positive way, at a time when they are most vulnerable.
