Spotlight – Update on Antisemitism in America

Antisemitism IS on the rise, in Illinois, the US, and around the world.  Why?  There is a disturbing lack of awareness about the nature and scope of contemporary antisemitism, even among Jews. The underlying problem has two key components — that the majority of Americans do not believe antisemitism is a big problem, and that 46% of Americans believe Jews are capable of handling issues of antisemitism on our own.

Our speaker, Sarah van Loon, American Jewish Committee’s Chicago Regional Director, will brief us on highlights from the AJC’s nationwide survey of American Jews and the general public. She will discuss existing efforts to combat antisemitism here and across America, including the #StandUpToJewishHate Campaign, a new campaign to raise awareness about antisemitism and mobilize all Americans to show support for the Jewish community.  

Sarah van Loon was appointed as the Evelyn R. Greene AJC Chicago Regional Director in 2021.  Prior to that, Sarah served as AJC Chicago’s Director of Advancement & Engagement where she focused on deepening the Midwest region’s resources and leadership ranks.  In 2017, Sarah was named one of Chicago’s “Jewish 36 Under 36” emerging leaders by JUF and OY! Chicago.
