Governor JB Pritzker signed SB 1863 and HB 2238 into law on June 16th. During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these bills ensure safe and active participation in the 2020 general election. Vote by mail (VBM) applications will go out to all recent voters in Illinois. The legislation also expands early voting hours at permanent polling places, improves the signature verification process and makes Election Day a state holiday. And more…which will be made clear during the next City Salon.
New ways to vote in Illinois
How do the changes effect you? Helene Gabelnick, of LWV Chicago, will explain the details on the three ways to vote – voting by mail, voting early, and voting in person at your local polling place.
A brief look at the numbers! “A whopping 78,823 Chicagoans already have applied to vote by mail in the fall general election, even though they won’t get their ballots until late September” says Greg Hinz, of Crain’s Chicago Business. He continues “According to Lance Gough, executive director of the Chicago Board of Elections, more than 500,000 city residents will likely apply to vote by mail by early October.” That’s a huge increase from the 118,000 who voted by mail in the March primary.
Safety and Integrity of voting by mail
The Honorable Karen A. Yarbrough, Clerk of Cook County and Edmund Michalowski Deputy County Clerk of Cook County will speak to the integrity and safety of voting by mail and in person.
The security issues of voting by mail are frequently under attack and Yarbrough and Michalowski will explain how the controls that have been put into place make it safe from fraud
They’ll also answer questions you have about voting in Cook County.
