7:00 pm — 8:30 pm

NCJW’s Suburban and City Salons invite you to One Book/One NCJW, An American Summer: Love and Death in Chicago.

Eddie Bocanegra, Senior Director HEARTLAND ALLIANCE’s READI Chicago, will present his personal story, one of darkness, redemption and re-dedication to helping others find their way.
READI helps men in some of Chicago’s most violence-prone neighborhoods, and at highest risk of gun violence, get off the streets and into jobs or job training. READI uses Martin Luther King Jr.’s principles of nonviolence, to interrupt the cycle of revenge that keeps violence alive.

Bocanegra’s story is told in prize-winning author, Alex Kotlowitz’s 2019 release, An American Summer: Love and Death in Chicago. The book focuses on the city’s most turbulent and violent neighborhoods and how that impacts the spirit of those residents and neighborhoods. Over the past twenty years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and another roughly 60,000 wounded by gunfire. Chicago is a city inflamed by gun violence and Bocanegra is working to put out the fires.
