Our Service Theme for February – Supporting Senior Citizens
During the pandemic, the elderly, more than most, have had to cope with feelings of isolation and a limited ability to connect with their loved ones. This month we would like to do something to show them some love and appreciation. We are going to be doing that by asking our members and the community to help to create Shabbat Gift Bags for residents of the senior living community we have chosen:
THE SELFHELP HOME
908 W. Argyle, Chicago, IL 60640
The Selfhelp Home was founded in 1938 in the shadow of the Holocaust as a purely volunteer mutual aid society where refugees and survivors could find community and rebuild their lives. Today, it thrives as a boutique Jewish community where older adults experience the highest quality of life possible, founded on the principles of compassion and dignity.
Our goal is to deliver 50 Shabbat Gift Bags to The Selfhelp Home on Friday, February 26, 2021.
Creating a Shabbat Gift Bag
Please use a colorful gift bag (size approximately 8” x 10”) with tissue inside.
In the gift bag, include a short handwritten message on a note card signed with your first name.
Include the following inside the gift bag:
- Lip balm / Chapstick
- Unscented hand lotion
- Small bag(s) of kosher candy (Note: Many candies have been labeled kosher by their manufacturer, including big names like Hershey, Wonka, and Nestle – Items such as Nestle assorted miniatures, Jelly Belly jelly beans, all milk chocolate and peanut M&Ms are kosher certified as well as LemonHeads and Buttermints.)
- Some type of small puzzle or large print paperback puzzle book, such as word find or a crossword puzzle book.
In addition to these items, our NCJW Gives Back committee will be purchasing a small 9-LED flashlight to go into each gift bag as well as a small plant for each residents room.
If you or someone you know cannot make a gift bag them self but would like to contribute to this project to help us meet our goal of creating 50 Shabbat Gift Bags along with delivering 50 plants to The Selfhelp Home, please visit https://ncjwcns.org/donate/.
