The Trump Administration’s March to Displace Immigrants a Disgrace to American Values
May 14, 2019, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed its anger and deep disappointment that the United States continues to push rules and regulations that damage immigrants and refugees NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“The Trump Administration published a rule on Friday to purge undocumented immigrants from federally subsidized housing, which the Department of Housing and Urban Development admitted could displace more than 55,000 US citizen children.
“Adding to the turmoil is a leaked proposal from the Department of Justice that would increase exponentially the number of people who could be deported for accessing public benefits. Current law states that the government may not deport someone for using those benefits if they are legally qualified to do so. The new rule would target immigrants and refugees who are dependent on such benefits, like Medicaid, food assistance, or supplemental security income, to survive.
“These measures, spearheaded by Senior White House Advisor Stephen Miller, are part of an ever-increasing white nationalist agenda designed to harm immigrants and their families. In light of today’s revelations about Miller’s plans for a massive nationwide raid that thankfully did not come into fruition, it is clear this extremist must go.
“Immigrants are a vital part of American society. This is a country built on the power of immigration; our American values depend on protecting it and our Jewish values dictate that we not turn away people at their time of greatest need.”
